Letter to Santa Template for Kids, With 2026 Mailing Dates

A letter to Santa template for kids needs three things: a few words to write, a drawing, and an address. Most of the web gives you only a printable page, but kids at 2, 4 and 7 need different things from the same letter. This post shows what to write at each age, gives a fill-in-the-blank text you can copy by hand, and lays out the 2026 mailing dates from USPS and Canada Post, including where blogs disagree. It is not a printable download, so you can start with any paper in the house. The mail deadlines are early in December, which is only a few weeks away.

What to Write in a Letter to Santa, by Age

A letter to Santa does not need to be neat, long or spelled right. The goal is for your child to say what they hope for and feel heard. Use the table to match the letter to your child, then copy the fill-in-the-blank text further down.

AgeWhat the letter looks likeGrown-up job
1 to 2 yearsCrayon scribbles and one big drawing. Nothing needs to be readable.Ask what it is, then write 'Love, [name]' and the one wish they said on the back.
3 to 4 yearsA drawing of 1 to 3 wishes, plus their name or first letter.Scribe: write the words they say, word for word.
5 to 6 yearsFill-in-the-blank sentences on wide-lined paper, with drawings.Sit nearby for spelling. Leave invented spelling alone.
7 to 8 yearsA full short letter: a question for Santa, 2 or 3 wishes, one thank-you.Read it once for the address and any private details.
A scribble counts as a letter at age 2.

This post gives you the words and the mailing dates. It is not a printable download. If you want a page to print, the Christmas Activity Pack includes a letter to Santa and a draw-your-wish-list page, and plain paper and crayons work just as well.

Big wishes can be hard to meet. Small, cheap gifts help fill the gap, and our advent calendar fillers post has 41 ideas that are not candy, sorted by age, plus free activity slips. Many families also keep the wish list short so Santa does not have to bring everything.

How to Write the Letter, Step by Step

  1. Step 1: Set up a letter station

Put a pile of paper, crayons or a pencil and a plain envelope on a low table. Keep a cup of crayons within reach and clear everything else away. A tidy spot cuts the 'I do not know where to start' stall.

  2. Step 2: Talk before writing

Ask three questions out loud: what are you hoping for, what was something kind you did this year, and what would you like to ask Santa? Their answers are the letter. For toddlers, one question is enough.

  3. Step 3: Draw the wishes first

Preschoolers can draw 2 or 3 simple wishes in boxes on the page, such as a ball, a book or a teddy. A drawing is easier than writing and tells Santa what they mean. Add the child's name at the bottom, or the first letter.

  4. Step 4: Add the words for older kids

Give early writers wide-lined paper and the fill-in-the-blank text. Let them sound out words and keep invented spelling. Do not correct a letter to Santa with a red pen.

  5. Step 5: Fold it and address the envelope

Fold the letter into thirds and slide it in. Write the address clearly in the middle of the front, and your return address in the top left corner. The next section has the 2026 addresses and dates.

  6. Step 6: Mail it together

Walk to the mailbox with your child so they can hand over the letter themselves. That short walk is often their favorite part, and it gives the letter a real feel without any extra prep.

Where and When to Mail a Letter to Santa in 2026

Address it neatly and add a stamp if you are mailing through USPS.

Mailing rules differ between programs, and some blog posts disagree with each other. We checked the official pages on October 26, 2026. Dates can change, so look at the official site before you mail.

USPS. The official Operation Santa site says the mailroom accepts letters from September 14, adopter registration opens November 2, letters can be adopted from November 16, and the last call for letter writers is December 5. WCAX/Gray News reports the same December 5 postmark deadline and the 123 Elf Road address. Adopters are volunteers who choose a letter to answer, so a reply is possible but not guaranteed.

Canada Post. Canada Post asks for letters by December 9, 2026. It says to mail all of a family's letters in one envelope, that Santa responds to all letters, and that delivery dates are not guaranteed. Its parents page also offers printable templates, three for younger children and two for older ones.

Two sources disagree. One popular printable-letters blog tells readers to mail between November 1 and December 3 under a 'Greetings from the North Pole' program with an Anchorage postmaster address. That is a different program from the official Operation Santa dates, and it has a different deadline. If you are unsure which one you are in, follow the official USPS page and mail early, around the first week of December at the latest.

Mail early: the mailbox is the best part for many kids.

Turn the Letter Into an Activity

A letter to Santa works as a whole afternoon of play if you want it to. These ideas use things you already have.

Decorate the envelope. Let your child add stickers and crayon stars around the edges, but keep the address area clear so the post office can read it.

Ages: 2 and up.

Prep: 2 minutes.

Mess: low.

Safety: check that small stickers are kept out of reach of children who still put things in their mouths.

Stamp walk. Let your child carry the letter, find the nearest mailbox and drop it in. Count the steps there, or spot something red on the way.

Ages: 2 and up.

Prep: none.

Mess: none.

Keepsake copy. Copy the letter on your phone or a copy machine before you mail it, then keep it in a small box with the year. Next December it is fun to compare drawings and handwriting.

A box of past letters becomes a family treat.

Before you mail the letter

What we like

  • Mailing: a real trip, a real stamp and a possible reply
  • Keeping it at home: no deadline, and you can read it aloud on Christmas Eve
  • Mailing: a good way to practise addresses with older kids

Keep in mind

  • Mailing: replies are not guaranteed and take time
  • Keeping it at home: a child may want to hear back
  • Both: the letter is only as good as the conversation behind it
